Our research projects focused on lifestyle diseases, cancer, dementia, sarcopenia, and critical illness are as follows:

1. We conducted research and development on a functional local ingredient with diabetes-preventive and ameliorative effects. For example, we explored the anti-atherosclerotic effect of fish oil and the anti-metabolic syndrome activity of citrus fruits.

 ☞ Graphical abstracts

2. We utilized metabolomic analysis to search for early diagnostic markers of lifestyle diseases or visceral obesity.

3. We generated genetically modified medaka (Oryzias latipes) as a new disease model animal for nutritional research.

4. Our research involved the search and functional analysis of novel genes regulating energy metabolism.

5. We investigated a nutritional intervention method for dementia using a new model animal.

In clinical studies, we focused on the following:

6. We conducted research and development of supportive therapy for dysgeusia associated with cancer therapy.

☞ Graphical abstracts

7. We researched and developed a nutritional intervention treatment for disease-related sarcopenia.

8. Our practical approach involved early nutritional support in the ICU.

9. We adopted a pragmatic approach to nutritional support for athletes or the elderly.

Greeting!

The University of Tokushima Graduate School of Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Metabolism and Nutrition

Professor Hiroshi SAKAUE

I have held the position of Professor in the Department of Metabolism and Nutrition since October 1, 2014. Throughout my academic journey, starting from my time as a medical student at Kobe University, I have consistently focused on researching diabetes mellitus. Currently, my research revolves around understanding the pathogenesis of obesity and conducting nutritional intervention studies, with a specific emphasis on lifestyle-related diseases.

The differentiation of universities has now gained momentum, independent of the management of individual departments. National universities themselves have undergone functional differentiation, thereby putting the uniqueness of each institution to the test. Universities are now expected to thrive in international competition, engage in collaborative research with society, and contribute to cooperative education.

In addition to the Department of Nutrition's existing responsibility of nurturing researchers and educators in the field of nutrition, we are dedicated to fostering exceptional leaders in clinical nutrition. Our aim is to establish a comprehensive framework encompassing education, research, and clinical practice.

self-introduction)

I was born in Osaka Prefecture and completed my education at Izumi High School. After graduating from Kobe University School of Medicine in 1989, I commenced my initial training at Kobe University Hospital and Nishiwaki Municipal Hospital in Hyogo Prefecture. Subsequently, I focused primarily on diabetes care while studying at the Second Department of Internal Medicine, Kobe University. During this period, I conducted research on insulin signaling and had the privilege to pursue further studies at the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Stanford University School of Medicine.

Following my time at Stanford, I dedicated myself to research, education, and clinical practice. I served as the Medical Director of the Welfare Division at Hyogo Prefectural Police Headquarters, held the position of COE Researcher at Kobe University, worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology, Diabetes Metabolism and Nephrology, Kobe University, and served as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Diabetes, Metabolism, and Endocrinology, Kobe University. Additionally, I worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology, Kinki University. Since 2008, I have been an Associate Professor at the Department of Metabolism and Nutrition, Tokushima University. In 2009, I joined the Diabetes Clinical Research and Development Center at the University of Tokushima, where I currently serve as the Director of the Division of Basic Research.
